Position purpose

To provide stimulating environments for children in various age groups; to enrich social, emotional, intellectual, language and physical development.  Through an emergent play based approach, will facilitate learning experiences that makes our values and mission statement evident. Build parent relationships that will support their child’s learning and development and be a link to community resources. 


  • Develops programming consistent with the centre's philosophy
  • Designs programs specific to the needs of the individual child while being respectful of each child's interests, special talents, character, and pace of learning
  • Recognizes each child in relation to personal, cultural, and socioeconomic background
  • Build relationships with each child and family that promote dignity and respect
  • Helps each child become aware of their role as an integral member of the group
  • Acts as a model from which children can learn
  • Maintains records such as, but not limited to; child development, health, attendance, daily logs, and injury reports
  • Maintains a clean, organized and safe learning environment
  • Ensures all children are engaged in learning activities
  • Implements health, safety and emergency procedures


  • Abide by the confidentiality policy
  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance in accordance with established dress code to include a name tag
  • Attend staff meetings (80% attendance – approval for exceptions)
  • Participate in training to promote and support professional growth which may include training recommended by the Director
  • Plan and implement methods of establishing a positive relationship with families
  • Participate with public relation activities
  • Must read and sign all mandated policies on an annual basis or as needed
  • Notify the Supervisor if unable to work (death in the family, illness) and provide a doctor’s note upon return
  • Be prepared to work in program when shift begins
  • Notify the Supervisor in the event of late arrival
  • Build intentional relationships with coworkers that are professional and respectful
  • Comply with all Health & Safety policies, and training
  • Follow the guidelines laid out in Developmentally Appropriate Practice - DAP
  • Must be able to lift children and equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Will regularly check their work email address for correspondence
  • Implement methods for effectively utilizing the services of Assistant teachers
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Early Childhood Education Diploma
  • Registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Teaching Experience of at least one year preferred
  • First Aid , CPR qualifications current and maintained
  • Acceptable Criminal Reference Search
  • Medical certificate of good health and clear TB test            

The incumbent must be sensitive, and mature, able to relate well to both children and adults.  Diplomacy, tact, and ability to react appropriately in an emergency situation as required.  The incumbent must be familiar with the Child Care and Early Years Act.
